District 9 Schoolhouse Conservation Area

Português   Español

The District 9 Schoolhouse Conservation Area is jointly managed by the Town of Upton Conservation Commission and Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT).

With its important wetland habitats and its proximity to other conserved lands, this 92-acre property was a conservation priority for SVT, the Town of Upton, and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation.

As of 1684 this land was known to be near the border of two Nipmuc villages; the Hassanamisco and Hassanemessit. (The nearby Hassanamisco Reservation in Grafton is some of the only unceeded Indigenous territory in Massachusetts.)

In 2022, the Town acquired this land to protect it from development, and SVT will hold a conservation restriction to protect the ecological features. We invite everyone to explore the trails and enjoy this beautiful natural area.

Full Description

This forested land is part of a mosaic of open space and important wildlife habitats. In Fall 2022, SVT and the Town of Upton partnered to protect this 92-acre property, and together we cleared trails for public use. The Upton Conservation Commission now owns the land, and SVT will hold a conservation restriction to protect its ecological features.

The land is named for a schoolhouse shown on an 1851 map. Each of nine districts in Upton had a schoolhouse, and the site of the District 9 schoolhouse is on private property near the conservation area.

Features of Note

The land sits within an Area of Critical Environmental Concern for the Miscoe, Warren, and Whitehall watersheds.

Intermittent streams and a vernal pool add diversity to the forest habitat, which includes Priority Habitat for Rare Species.

The neighboring Town-owned Stefans Farm Open Space spans 120 acres and offers habitat for butterflies, birds, and other animals.

Across Fowler Street, the Robertson Property features forested wetlands and is traversed by a lengthy section of Warren Brook.

Just beyond the Robertson Property, the 2,600-acre Upton State Forest stretches into the neighboring towns of Hopkinton and Westborough.
