Trail Named for Wayland Conservationist
During a ceremony on June 14, SVT renamed the trail at Upper Mill Brook in Wayland in memory of long-time Board member Stephen Winthrop.
A Wayland resident who passed away in 2018, Stephen was an ardent supporter of conservation. He joined SVT’s Board of Directors in 2002 and served in numerous roles during his 15-year tenure, most notably as President, Vice President, and long-time member of the Finance Committee. He was also well-known throughout Wayland for his commitment to local conservation efforts.
Stephen brought deep thoughtfulness to every board deliberation, and he is remembered by fellow directors and staff as a particularly kind and caring person.
After being diagnosed with ALS in 2013, Stephen became chair of the ALS Association, where he led the effort to find a cure for the disease. Despite the demands of leading this national effort, Stephen remained a good friend to SVT and conservation.
