Mainstone Farm Anniversary Walking Route, Stop #2

Community and Volunteer Support

The protection of Mainstone Farm enabled us to extend the beautiful trail network that runs through Hamlen Woods, Reeves Hill, Turkey Hill, and Wayland Hill. Now, five miles of trails are open from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year.

Large trail networks like this are an important community asset, providing a place to hike, birdwatch, cross-country ski, or simply get inspired by nature.

Just as community support was integral to the protection of Mainstone Farm, community support continues to play a role in the maintenance of the trails. SVT, the Town of Wayland, and a group of dedicated volunteers work together to care for these trails. We regularly visit the properties to make sure the trails are passable and to trim back brush and saplings where necessary.

Local scouts have also played an important role in trail maintenance. For example, in 2022, local Boy Scouts installed two new bridges over Snake Brook. Previously, logs had been placed across the brook to create makeshift crossings, but they often filled with standing water. The new sturdy bridges provide an easier crossing and let water pass underneath to prevent pooling. David Liu built one as part of his Eagle Project in April, and a group of Wayland scouts built the other as a service project on National Trails Day in June.

Thank you to these scouts and their adult supervisors. We couldn’t do this work alone!
