Founders' Garden

The Founders' Garden was named to honor those who founded SVT in 1953. Within the garden are several different native plants and ornamental cultivars.

Hydrangeas

One cultivated flower found in this garden is the hydrangea. It is one of the most popular ornamental plants in the world, being native to North and South America as well as Asia.

Hydrangea is a genus of about 100 different species, making it incredibly variable in size, shape, and color. The hydrangea is unique in the plant world as the color of its flower petals varies depending on the soil alkalinity or pH. The flowers, which bloom in three styles (mophead, panicle, or lacecap), actually extract aluminum from the soil to give color to the petals.
