Forest Health Walk, Stop 12
Wetlands
You are now standing near the edge of a shrubby swamp. Swamps and other wetlands contribute to the plant diversity of a forest, because different types of vegetation grow in wet and dry areas.
Vegetation in and around this swampy area includes red maple, high bush blueberry, sweet peppercorn, cinnamon fern, sedges, and cattails.
Wetlands also provide habitat for many species of animals.
To help protect wetlands and streams, trail visitors and their dogs should stay on marked trails and bridges. This prevents the trampling of vegetation and the disruption of the soil health.
Stop 13 is just up ahead.
