The Beginnings of a Trail at Mechanic Street in Upton
The Beginnings of a Trail at Mechanic Street in Upton

Thanks to the efforts of many hard-working volunteers during Volunteer Week 2024, we are making impressive progress on new trails at the recently conserved Mechanic Street property in Upton.

In 2022, SVT assisted the Town of Upton in protecting this 92-acre property, and we will play a key role in managing the new conservation area. As part of that effort, we are creating trails and parking areas with an eye toward opening the trail network by year's end.

Work began on Sunday, April 21, when a group of volunteers started to clear the new trail. On the morning of Thursday, April 25, another group of volunteers from Bose continued this effort, using rakes, loppers, and their gloved hands to clear small trees, shrubs, and invasive plants from the planned route. Later that day, a third, smaller group of volunteers performed similar tasks, and by the end of this third session, a defined trail was clearly visible at the property.

The work is far from over, and we have planned additional volunteer workdays for June, July and August.

We welcome your help! Keep an eye on our Program Calendar to register for these and other volunteer opportunities.

Thank you to The Public Lands Fund of Dick's Sporting Goods for financial assistance in creating these trails.
