Mattie VandenBoom photographed this northern saw-whet owl at Eager Woods in Berlin. Mattie, the Conservation Agent in Berlin, shares the following about an ongoing project at Eager Woods, land that was conserved in partnership with SVT.

"The Berlin Conservation Commission is conducting a pilot season for a northern saw-whet owl banding station at Eager Woods. During the fall, owl researchers throughout North America participate in Project Owlnet. Prior to the 1990's, northern saw-whets were considered rare and little was known about their migration patterns. In 1994, Project Owlnet was established to help understand the migratory and population trends of these tiny owls. Project Owlnet has opened up the lines of communication between owl researchers and provides many resources for those participating in the project."

All banding is conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey.
