Moritz Forest: Fully Conserved!

On June 11, the Town of Acton granted a conservation restriction (CR) to SVT on the 33-acre Moritz Forest property in the eastern part of town, putting the finishing touches on a conservation success that was years in the making.

We are delighted to play a role in protecting this land, which is part of the Nashoba Brook corridor and sits adjacent to both the Town-owned Wetherbee Conservation Land and the popular Bruce Freeman Rail Trail. This area of town, located along Route 2 not far from the Concord Rotary, is known as the “Agricultural Gateway” of Acton.

The protection of Moritz Forest:

  • safeguards the Nashoba Brook and nearby wetlands, which protects water quality and enhances flood and drought resilience;
  • preserves forest, wetland, and vernal pool habitats that are home to a diversity of wildlife; and
  • creates connectivity between other conserved habitats in the area.

In the coming months, the Town plans to open a loop trail that will enable visitors to enjoy the natural areas of this property. Stay tuned for news of the official trail-opening celebration.

The protection of this forested property resulted from many years of discussions and planning. With assistance from SVT, Acton Conservation Trust, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Town purchased the land from the Moritz Family in April 2025 at a bargain price. By placing a CR on the property, the Town has permanently protected it from development.

Thank you to everyone who supported this effort. SVT especially thanks the Family of George and Doris Meyers for its financial support of the project.
