Hop Brook Natural Area Trail Guide

Post 5

The trail ends in front of this beautiful pond. Its serene peace is accentuated by the nature that can be observed in the area. Listen for tree swallows and watch dragonflies as they swoop over the water. The quiet may be broken by the occasional American bullfrog, which croaks all around the pond. Water gliders skim the surface of the water, creating small ripples that only mildly disturb the calm water. The other cause of these ripples, small fish, are nearly impossible to see from here, but look closely! The trail ends here, private property is ahead, turn around to return to the trail head.

The pond before you is home to a wide variety of wildlife. It serves as a habitat to many different species of fish, turtles, birds, frogs, and insects. The water from this pond makes its way northwest until it meets up with the Hop Brook system into Sudbury. This becomes the Wash Brook System, a tributary of the Sudbury River.
