SVT is delighted to have joined with the Town of Berlin’s Conservation Commission to create a new 44-acre conservation area in the northern part of town.
On February 23, 2023, SVT accepted the deed to the Highland Ridge Woods property that includes a white pine forest located within a meandering wildlife corridor. The property also plays a role in flood protection for the surrounding area.
The landowner donated the land to SVT while developing the adjacent Homes at Highland Ridge 55+ community. During the permitting process, the Town of Berlin required that these 44 acres be permanently conserved as open space.
SVT is happy to accept this new conservation land, as it had been identified as a high priority for protection. The property features a rich diversity of habitats, with a mix of young and old trees and plentiful plants in the understory. It also sits near other undeveloped lands that provide safe harbor for wildlife.
In the coming months, we will grant a conservation restriction on the property to the Berlin Conservation Commission, and we will work with the Town to create and maintain trails that will provide permanent public access.
