On December 15, 2025, SVT permanently protected Sweet Autumn Farm in Carlisle with a conservation restriction (CR). The owner generously donated the CR over 12.8 acres of the approximately 14-acre property to ensure the land could always be available for farming and be able to provide local produce to the community.

Many area residents may be familiar with Sweet Autumn Farm because a farmstand on the property is open to the public seasonally. In addition, the farm also hosts classes through The Boston School of Herbal Studies.

Sweet Autumn Farm is located near Woodhaven Farm, which SVT and the Carlisle Conservation Foundation protected with a CR in 2016. Both lands are part of an expansive corridor of open space that includes over 1,700 acres of land at Estabrook Woods on the Carlisle-Concord line.

Thank you to the landowner for her tremendous generosity and for protecting this beautiful agricultural land.

Thank you also to the Family of George and Doris Meyers for their financial support of this project.

Why Protect This Land?

Sweet Autumn Farm is a small organic farm operation that grows herbs, vegetables, cut flowers, and other specialty produce. The owner who contacted SVT about conserving the property is passionate about soil health, sustainable agriculture, nutrition as medicine, and providing farm- and nature-based education opportunities via her land. The Boston School of Herbal Studies hosts courses from her property, where students learn plant identification and participate in herbalism teachings.

By conserving the land, the owner hopes the legacy of Sweet Autumn Farm will continue with other owners. To that end, she is investigating potential future partnerships that could keep the land in agriculture once her own use of the land winds down.

Ecological Importance

A portion of the property has been identified as Farmland of Statewide Importance. Immediately adjacent to the land to the east is an area designated as BioMap Local Rare Species.

Sweet Autumn Farm also sits in a corridor of protected open space. Adjacent to the property across Prospect Street is Woodhaven Farm (which is protected with a conservation restriction that is co-held by SVT and the Carlisle Conservation Foundation) and an expansive corridor of other protected open space that includes the over 1,700-acre Estabrook Woods land (which extends from Carlisle into Concord).

Sweet Autumn Farm has also been identified as important to conserve for both inland flood resilience and for regional habitat connectivity according to the The Nature Conservancy's Nature Based Solutions dataset.

How We Protected This Land

In December 2025, the landowner donated a conservation restriction on 12.8 acres of the 14-acre property to SVT.

We thank the landowner for her tremendous generosity, and we also thank the Family of George and Doris Meyers for their financial support that enabled us to cover our costs for this project.
