Trails Open at 549 Main Street
Congratulations to the Acton Water District, which has opened public trails at its 549 Main Street land that protects the town water supply, buffers the Nashoba Brook corridor, and sits adjacent to the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail.
The Water District purchased the 57-acre property from the Conant Family in December 2023 with support from the Town of Acton, Acton Conservation Trust, a Drinking Water Supply Protection grant and an MVP program action grant (both from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts), and SVT. SVT and the Town now co-hold a conservation restriction that permanently protects the land and ensures public access to the trail network.
During the Trail Opening Ceremony on October 28, the Acton Water District announced that the public trails will be known as "The Trails to Brewster’s Meadow” in honor of Brewster Conant, Sr., who cared for the fields for many years before his death in 2018. Members of the Conant Family addressed the gathering during the ceremony, and representatives of Sen. Jamie Eldridge presented a citation of appreciation to the Conant siblings for conserving their family's land.
History buffs will note that the trails at 549 Main Street also include the last remaining unpaved portion of the Isaac Davis Trail, which marks the route that the Acton Minuteman followed as they marched to Concord during the Battle of Concord in April 1775.
SVT was delighted to play a part in conserving this land and keeping it open for public use. A map of the property is available on the Acton Water District website.
