Ron McAdow photographed this nest of a potter wasp near his home in West Concord.  Ron writes that '''A potter wasp built this 3/8" nest in a houseplant on my deck in West Concord.  It was built in one day, and sealed on the next.  The wasp was medium sized, mostly black, with some light markings on her abdomen.  According to what I've looked up about these wasps, she would have stocked the jug with paralyzed caterpillars and laid one egg before sealing the nest.  Somehow apparently the saliva she mixes into the mud makes it rain-proof.  It did survive a storm, but then disappeared yesterday.  Presumably some bird knew it would contain food?''' (click on image for a larger view).
