Pileated Woodpecker signs in Maynard
February 16, 2015
Lisa Vernegaard photographed these trees with pileated woodpecker holes at the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge in Maynard. Pileated woodpeckers will chop out distinctive, rectangular-shaped holes in dead or dying trees to get at insects such as carpenter ants that are feeding on the decaying wood. While we may not often see the largest of our woodpeckers, we can often hear them as they are chopping away. These excavated holes also become good shelter for cavity nesting birds and mammals.
