Erik Limpaecher photographed this Blanding's turtle in Concord. A special sighting, and a threatened turtle in Massachusetts, you can learn more about the Blanding's turtle from the Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program's fact sheet.
According to Brian Butler, of Oxbow Associates, the turtle was first captured in 2004, and was an adult at that time, and is now probably at least 30 years old and could easily be over 50 years old. Researchers can identify an individual by the notches they leave along the margins of its shell, seen in the second photo. Brian says that beyond its capture data, the "dark facial pigment and thick (and also stumpy) tail indicate he is an older male."
