The Value of Planned Giving

By Michael Sanders, Director of Membership.  Last  week, the SVT fundraising staff participated in a webinar about planned giving, hosted by the Land Trust Alliance.  It gave me a fresh, new perspective on the value of planned giving.  For years, SVT has had a planned giving group called Living Water Society, with about twenty-five members confirmed.  Although we are always looking to build the Living Water Society list, the difficulty lies in that planned gifts are often unpredictable, may come with restrictions, and are a one-time gift.  Based on the webinar, I now have an increased appreciation for how a planned gift can work in conjunction with SVT’s other fundraising avenues.
One of the best points I learned was that planned gifts align well with long-term Stewardship.  Planned gifts are an individual’s legacy, while Stewardship is the legacy of the organization’s work.  For people who have been supporters of an organization for a long time, what better way to show your legacy toward the organization than by leaving a lasting bequest for what the organization meant to you and how you live your life?  SVT does its best to build solid, respectful, integrity-based relationships with its members.  We always say that we do this work on behalf of the members.  The 3,000 plus households that support SVT are the community we represent.  We are grateful for your ongoing support.
 
 
SVT was here before I was born and will continue to be here long after I’m gone.  The organization, thanks to the members, has had a lasting difference on the quality of life in the region of the Concord, Assabet, and Sudbury rivers.  From seeing a bald eagle on the Sudbury River last weekend, to having wild places to go for walks, to having available farmland—these are just some of the reasons SVT means a lot to me.
